At the start of 2015 our objective was to finish in the top 20 for the first time in the open race table and although we only had a few open race dogs at the start of the year, those few were very decent. Things have not really gone to plan during the course of the year with injuries to those few open race dogs we started the year with but nevertheless, we shall look back on 2015 with some very fond memories.
Queen Mother Cup
In March of 2015 Touch Tackle made his first appearance of the year in the heats of the Category 2 'Stone's Bitter Queen Mother Memorial Cup.'
Although narrowly beaten in the first round, he won his semi final, before going on to land the £4000 first prize on Mothers Day.
The Coral Regency
Some nine months before this competition started we had earmarked Touch Tackle's main target for the year to be 'The Coral Regency; at Hove Stadium. He had looked so suitable to the track when trialling round there over 515m as a pup, we had seen the Regency as his best chance of a Category One success.
So it was all the more satisfying that Touch Tackle managed to go through this £10000 to the winner competition unbeaten and giving our kennel its first ever Category One success.
Four Opens Out Of Four At Yarmouth Stadium
On August 12th 2015 we headed off to Yarmouth Stadium with four open race runners. They all looked to have a competitive chance on paper and the owners were advised of that accordingly. It proved a great night for the kennel and a great night for Jim Daly Racing Syndicate Owners, who were responsible for all four greyhounds.
Droopys Scion 2/1
Droopys Rum 5/2
Kelva Destiny 5/2
Droopys Alberta 5/2
Completed 120/1 Four timer on the night
Returning To Graded Racing At Yarmouth Stadium
Just over two years ago we left Yarmouth Stadium, a track we had been attached to for about 8 years . Part of the reason for leaving was that we were moving away from the area to a new kennel.
Initially we went to Coventry Stadium, which was a track centrally based in comparison to our kennels, it had a good running surface ,a good balance of graded and open racing and a high level of prize money.
Even before Coventry had closed we had been in talks with Towcester about joining them once the new track had been built. At that stage Towcester sounded very appealing, had some great fresh idea's and looked like a bright light at the end of the tunnel.
With Coventry closing we looked for a stop gap track to take us though to the opening of Towcester, we were at Henlow for a short time and just really didn't fit in with the management and left there to go to Sittingbourne, who were very short of dogs at the time.
Again Sittingbourne was just seen as a short term move until Towcester opened, but when Towcester did eventually open , the move there did not feel right for us at the time, so we did not take up a position there. This left us with a bit of a dilemma because we were doing a 300 mile round trip to Sittingbourne, which was only ever meant to be short term. We really needed to find somewhere closer to run our graded dogs, and with Peterborough only 15 miles from the kennels, we decided to give that track a try. It is a tricky little circuit to run and really suits early paced runners, so it soon became obvious we had too many dogs not suited to the track .
And so it went full circle...
On the 2nd of September 2015 we returned home with our first runner back at Yarmouth Stadium.
BAGS Track Championship
The whole idea of the BAGS Track Championship makes it a very exciting competition, and one the everyone at Kelva Kennels looks forward to.
We had a great time last year helping Sittingbourne get the finals, and although Yarmouth were pitched in a very hard group this year, with ; Nottingham, Peterborough, Towcester and Sheffield , we were still keen to play a part and knick a race or two.
Droopys Scion qualified for the youngsters division for us, and although she was not able to run in the Sheffield leg, she did win her heat at Yarmouth and Peterborough, finished runner up at Nottingham and was a very unlucky loser at Towcester.
Great Ormond Street Charity Night At Harlow Stadium
The Great Ormond Street Charity Meeting is one that is very close to our hearts, having organised the event in 2013.
This years event was held at Harlow Stadium, organised by Maurice Newman.
The weather was not great and the track was flooded, but the meeting went ahead and was screened live on Racing Post Tv .
We managed to have four open race winners on the night , courtesy of ;
Master View 3/1
Barefoot Beauty 4/1
Kelva Destiny 6/1
Droopys Rum 9/4
Barefoot Beauty Bargain Buy
With the GBGB Awards coming up, they do actually have a category for best graded runner of the year and although Barefoot Beauty probably hasn't had enough races to warrant winning that title, I do not think there will be too many greyhounds with her price tag, having such a good record.
We bought Barefoot Beauty as an unraced pup, for a very small amount of money for our Jim Daly Racing Syndicate Owners.
Starting off in A4 grade at Yarmouth Stadium in September, she has now managed to win 8 of her 15 starts, including ; 3 A1 wins and 2 Opens .
